is the journey of two friends traveling through Italy, on the hunt for an authentic pizzaiolo, in hopes of bringing him home and creating an authentic Italian pizzeria together.
It’s summer, 40° in Italy and the two were invited in to stay at Nonna’s place. After visiting many classy pizzerias, they soon found the Pizzaiolo. Between spritz and many late night gin & tonics, they met a friend, of a friend, of a friend that is a bartender… and guess what?
The two friends missed their flights home. However, they managed to convince her to join on their journey to the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean. Shortly after, they started importing fresh, traditional Italian ingredients and combining them with local Azorean products to create an original Pizza Napoletana right in the heart of Ponta Delgada.
The day before the opening the most Italian/Azorean local showed up and the last team member was found. Together they decided to call their new home, NONNAS – a tribute to all our beloved grandmothers.
OUR MISSION
We bake like they do in Naples. We strive for a dough with a mild tanginess and let it rest. It might not be the easiest way to bake, but the proper way. Our pizzas are flash-baked at 430 degrees to give it a moist, light crust with some blisters.
